CRAFTS, stone
Using dry stones in building shacks and walls dividing fields is normal practice in rural parts of Terres de l'Ebre, especially in dry areas, but the most typical example can be found in a village called La Fatarella. This building technique consists of fitting the stones together (without having worked on them previously), one on top of the other without using any other material. This technique can be seen in different elements forming the landscape (paths, dividing walls) for shelters on shacks and porches, in buildings related to water (wells, irrigation channels, water tanks), for agricultural use (kilns, mills) etc., and these are all visual elements which are typical of the inland scenery in Terres de l’Ebre.
On the other hand, working with stone is a very deep rooted tradition in Ulldecona (Montsià). Stone workers in this village specialize in producing olive oil mills, which was brought about by the abundance of high quality, hard rock. "Stone from Ulldecona" has acquired a certain prestige among builders of rural buildings, and due to this there are currently 5 companies responsible for exploiting the stone at quarries around the village.
