HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, Ebre Battle sites
HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, EBRE BATTLE SITES Terres de l’Ebre has experienced at first hand one of the most tragic moments of contemporary history in this country, the Battle of Ebre. It happened between July and November in 1938 towards the end of the Civil War, and 130,000 lives were lost in a war of waste.
This battle took place on the banks of the Ebre River, between Mequinensa and Amposta, with Pàndols and Cavalls mountain ranges being key points. Some decisive areas of this defeat of the Republican army at the hands of General Francisco or Franco have been restored. So now you can visit trenches, shelters and monuments along the routes through the aforementioned mountains. A study Centre of the Ebre Battle has also been created in Gandesa, and two Interpretation centres installed in Pinell de Brai and Corbera d’Ebre. The last, having been totally destroyed during the war, and when it finished it was decided that the old village be kept in exactly the same state as it had been left and a new village be constructed lower down.
