HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, religious buildings
HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS

In the Ebre regions, we can find some outstanding examples of religious architecture from different eras and with different functions, from Gothic churches like Sant Lluc in Ulldecona, or Tortosa Cathedral, to a number of Renaissance churches in Terra Alta, going from Gothic to Baroque style. The convents which were residences for communities of different religious Orders also include a great example of different architectural styles. The most popular buildings which are scattered throughout the region are Hermitages and Sanctuaries where traditional pilgrimages and celebrations are held. We can find them at every village, but far away from the centre. They were places where people went to worship the local patron saint, an activity which usually went hand in hand with a great party.

Cathedrals and churches

HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGSThere are numerous amazing churches in this area, both for their external appearance and for their interior details: the façades, arches, rose windows, stained glass windows, altarpieces and decorative details which are concealed in the interior architecture, there is a wealth of things for an observant visitor to discover. The most remarkable example is Santa Maria Cathedral in Tortosa, built between the fourteenth and eighteenth centuries, and still conserving most of its original Gothic features, but the façade and main chapels are Baroque. The fourteenth and fifteenth century altarpieces and Renaissance choir loft are also splendid pieces of work. The most impressive churches in chronological order are the mediaeval church of Palma d'Ebre, the arch-priest church of Gandesa, with its Roman style portal, the Gothic church of Horta de San Joan or Sant Lluc de Ulldecona and the Renaissance church of Miravet, among others.

Convents

HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGSConvents first started to appear in the Ebre region at the beginning of the twelfth century, when more people started to inhabit the area. Sant Salvador convent or Mare de Déu dels Àngels in Horta de Sant Joan is one of the first examples. It was built by Templars in the thirteenth century and extended by Hospitalers in the fourteenth century; Franciscans also left their mark with some building work. The mediaeval Convent of Santa Clara in Tortosa features a Gothic cloister from the thirteenth century. From a much later date, we can find the Convent of Les Monges Agustines founded in 1724 by the Order of the Hospital, however the church dates to the end of the nineteenth century, unfortunately wars destroyed all original images and archives. Currently a community of closed Order nuns lives there. Also from the end of the nineteenth century is the Convent de les Minimes in Móra d'Ebre. The latest example, from 1904, is the Teresianes Convent or School in Vinebre, which is modern in style and built by the architect Bernat Martorell, a student of Gaudí

Hermitages and Sanctuaries

HISTORICAL AND MONUMENTAL HERITAGE, RELIGIOUS BUILDINGSHermitages and Sanctuaries are scattered round the outskirts of towns and villages, and on some occasions even a few kilometres away. In days of old they were important centres of public worship, where pilgrimages and festivals were celebrated, sometimes people from other areas gathered there too. Some popular festivals are still celebrated in these buildings which have either been well-maintained or restored. One of the best examples is Fontcalda Sanctuary in Gandesa, which is an old spa that became famous due to the medicinal character of its water. Mare de déu de la Pietat Hermitage in Ulldecona, Remei sanctuary in Alcanar, Sant Roc in Paüls, and Mare de Déu Hermitage in l'Aldea, are but a few of the many examples which can be found.
