Fishing and shellfish farming characterize the ever-present fishing nature of villagers along the coast of the Ebre. The Delta is extremely rich in nutrients – due to the combination of fresh and salt water – and these conditions are excellent for catching king prawns and eels and for farming shellfish. Sweet and savoury products adding flavour and diversity to the gastronomy of Terres de l'Ebre.
The amount of nutrients flowing into the sea from the river makes the coast of Terres de l'Ebre a really suitable place for fishing. Along this section of the coast, there are 5 fishing ports: L'Ametlla de Mar port (80 boats), L'Ampolla (40 boats), Deltebre (20 boats), Cases de Alcanar (17 boats) and Sant Carles de la Rapìta port which has more than 160 boats, making it the third biggest regarding production in Catalonia. When the fishing boats arrive at the port, one of the most typical fishing rituals for coastal villages in Terres de l'Ebre begins: unloading the boxes and the start of the auction, usually from Monday to Friday, in the morning and the afternoon.
