Geographic and geologic conditions, plus the mild climate of Terres de l'Ebre, have long favoured the growth of olive trees and the production of aromatic, balanced olive oil. In fact, the olive oil produced in the Baix Ebre, Montsià and Terra Alta regions have been recognized with two designation of origins – D.O. Baix Ebre Montsià and D.O. Terra Alta – which certify their quality; an award for the effort of their producers in preserving this thousand year old tradition, which hasn't changed over the centuries. Indeed, currently, Terres de l'Ebre makes about 40% of the olive oil produced in Catalonia, an activity which has become one of the most important for agricultural economy in the region.
From November to February olive oil co-operatives in Terres de l'Ebre welcome the first olive oil of the season with different festive celebrations including popular meals, exhibitions, debates, open-door workshops and the presentation, tasting and sale of olive oil. A great example of these activities are the olive oil fairs which are held in different villages in these regions - La Fatarella, Godall, Santa Bàrbara, Jesús and Bot - they are great places to meet people and relax, with this golden liquid, so characteristic of Mediterranean cuisine, being the focal point. The Santa Barbara plains are also known as the oil plains or the "Mar d'oliveres" (Sea of olive trees)
