Fauna in the Ebre Delta National Park
add to planner
One of the most important environmental features of the Ebre Delta, is the numerous amount of birds living there, this fact has helped to make this area one of the most important in the Mediterranean basin. When the rice has been harvested in the autumn, and the fields are still wet, the area is colonized by between 50,000 and 100,000 migratory birds, of some 300 different species, which is 60% of the species in Europe. Some of the most outstanding birds are the Northern Shoveler, the Eurasian Wigeon, numerous mallards, as well as the Common Shelduck, Gadwall, Common Teal and the Common Pochard.
However there are many other animals apart from birds. The warm, humid climate, for example, favours leeches and mosquitos, which are especially active during the summer. There are reptiles, like the water snake. The river also plays an important role, by bringing nutrients to the sea, encouraging the development and breeding of a great many fish. Between 30 and 50 tons of eels are fished here in the traditional way each year. Gilthead bream, Umbrine, Sea Bass and Red Mullet are also common, giving deserved fame to the Delta coastline.
