The Ebre Delta is the most important humid area in Catalonia. It is situated on the confluence of the river and the Mediterranean Sea, and one of its special features is the amount of lagoons to be found there. La Bassa de les Olles, Canal Vell, Alfacada lagoon, La Tancada and l'Encanyissada reservoirs, and Els Ullals de Baltasar are places of environmental interest, where you can observe most of the 350 species of birds which live in the Ebre Delta National Park.
Furthermore, in Els Ports massif — despite being a limestone massif that does not retain water —some lagoons can also be found. For example, Les Basses de la Foia, which is close to Masdenverge and was declared an Area of Natural Interest. This area has the attraction of water in the middle of a typically Mediterranean landscape, where olive trees and garrigue shrubland prevail. This is the biggest lagoon in the north of the Delta. | |
