Islands on the Ebre

Practical information

ROUTES
ROUTES Whether you travel by canoe or motorboat, when you sail down the Ebre you can peacefully discover new ways of looking at riverside landscapes. The section suitable for sailing starts at Móra d'Ebre, and from here you can travel for almost 90km downstream until you reach the Delta.

One of the most scenically beautiful parts of the river is that which goes from Móra d’Ebre to Miravet (with its Templar castle on top of the mountain) and Benifallet. During this journey you can see the Cardó Mountains and Cavalls mountain range which overlook the river as it quietly flows along, through a lush and wild riverside forest.

RIVER NAVIGATIONThe journey can continue from Benifallet across Assut de Xerta, a dam of Muslim origin, and then further south the river flows through Tortosa, where you have a fantastic view of the mediaeval palaces in the old quarter which still retain their original facades. Little by little the Ebre River becomes less forceful, but gets wider. The suspension bridge lets you know that you have arrived at Amposta, and from here to the mouth of the river the waters are calm. The last pieces of land you see before reaching the sea are the islands of Sant Antoni and Buda.

It should also be noted, that it is possible to sail a little further north in Móra d'Ebre. In the calm waters of Flix reservoir you can discover the surroundings by canoe or kayak. Whilst at Riba-Roja reservoir you can rent a boat and sail up to the village of Faió, which was covered by the Riba-Roja d'Ebre reservoir until the middle of the twentieth century. These kinds of activities are an ideal complement to recreational fishing, which is a popular sport in enclosed areas of water like the reservoirs on the Ebre River.
