Flora in Els Ports National Park

Els Ports Massif is a veritable paradise for lovers of botany. There are more than 1,000 plant species, which are typical of the Mediterranean climate and mountainous areas. Predominant on sunny slopes, are Garrigue scrubland and Chamaerops (the only indigenous palm tree in the Iberian peninsula). In shady places, on the other hand, there are Holm oaks (with short leaves) that coexist with the pine trees, mainly the Scots pine. In the highest and most humid areas of the massif there are yew and beech trees, mostly around the Fageda del Retaule route, these most southern of their kind in Europe.
The rough terrain, presenting difficult access to some areas of Els Ports, has favoured the preservation of certain plant species, as well as trees over a hundred years old, which are protected monumental landmarks: the Faig Pare, Pi Ramut, Carrasca Grossa and the Marturi yew trees are just some examples.
