TREKKING in Els Ports National Park
Els Ports National ParkEls Ports National Park offers a large number of routes over all kinds of ground, such as ravines, streams, thick forests or high plains. As a complement to local routes, the GRs which cover long distances, allow you to go deep into the massif.

There are two GR paths which cross this mountain range: the first is the GR-7 which crosses it lengthwise, going past Font Ferrera - the most southern slope of the massif – Casetes Velles, Mascar, Foia, Sant Roc forest and the village of Paüls, where it goes northwards to enter Terra Alta. A variation of this route is the GR-171, which separates from the GR-7 at Mascar, going past Toscar fountain and the village of Alfara de Carles to meet the main branch in Paüls. The second is the GR-8 which is on the border of Aragón, and this takes you from Font Ferrera Refuge to Beseit (Matarranya) across the areas of Rafalgarí and Millers.

The hikers route “Estels del Sud” (Stars of the south) offers a signposted hike over the massif, using a lot of the GR paths. It is a magnificent excursion in 5 stages, similar to well-known trekking trips in other mountains, like the Carros de Foc in the Central Pyrenees.

If you choose to take one of these routes, you can stay at one of the several refuges along the way: Font Ferrera Refuge (managed by the Federation of Catalonia Hikers Association), Mas del Flare Refuge (here, you need to ask for the key) and Caro Refuge (managed by the Catalonia Hikers Union) among others. Also, visitors will find a great deal of services in the surrounding villages.
