Modernist buildings in Tortosa

At the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century, there was an period of social and economic splendour, as well as urban development in Tortosa. The growth of the city forced the demolition of part of the walls, and families of nobility moved to new, larger and more spacious suburbs. There are some wonderful Modernist buildings from this period, and if you walk through the town you will discover that most of them are situated in Eixample.
One of the most representative Modernist buildings in Tortosa is the City Slaughterhouse, by architect Pau Monguió. It was built on farm land near the river, and comprises a group of pavilions with a combination of open and closed areas. The exterior of these buildings is brick and ceramics. The City Market is another typical building from this period, and it has a rectangular floor with a metallic structure in the ceiling. Part of the work was managed by the architect, Joan Abril.
With the demolition of the walls, new green ares were created. In the middle of the nineteenth century some Modernist
Gardens were built, known as Teodor González Park, the nname of the Mayor who planned them.
Richer families from Tortosa wanted to make their power more noticeable, so they had their homes built by the most famous Modernist architects of the time. Bau House, by architect Josep Plantada i Artigas, is just one example. The ground floor of this house is decorated with two beautiful series of pillars, and on the first floor there is a large central platform, which is decorated with peaks and gargoyles. Bau House is currently the headquarters for the Ebre Region Professional Association of Architects in Catalonia.
Finally, in front of l'Olivera door, which leads to the Cathedral, is Grego House, a unique building built by Pau Monguió. Here, the architect has chosen to use rounded shapes on the theme of nature, these are the most characteristic elements of Modernist art.
