Ulldecona. The Old Quarter

add to planner

The old quarter of Ulldecona still retains the charm of its mediaeval history. In the middle of the village stands Sant Lluc church, which is in Gothic style, and is located in a porticoed square (officially known as the church square). There are stately homes in nearby streets and alleyways, an important one being the Casa de la Comanda, the old headquarters of the Commanders in the fifteenth century, and Father Domingo Solà's house, founder of the Ekumene organization. Furthermore, in La Purissima street and Sant Crisòfal street, you can see Baroque style stately homes with interesting porches, entrances and merlons. Streets with unique charm are l'Embut street, Carme street and Frares square, here you will find arches joining the two façades, among other architectural elements. If you take a walk through the old village centre you will discover some Modernist style houses dotted around, but most of them are in Aribau street, Sant Lluc street and Passeig de la Estació.

The cave paintings at the site in Ulldecona, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, and the mediaeval castle located in the outskirts of the village are two cultural, tourist attractions along with the charming porched square and narrow streets forming the old quarter Ulldecona.
