Sant Antoni Festival, Gandesa

add to planner

The Sant Antoni Festival is celebrated on 17th January every year.

One of the most important events at this festival is collecting firewood from different streets in Gandesa. The "Majorals and majorales", accompanied by the Sant Antoni "Baconet", the "Pubilles, Pubilleta" and heirs have to collect the wood; the "Grallers" and "Gegants" accompany them, with two donkeys pushing a cart containing the Sant Antoni image. The firewood is auctioned in the square, together with the Sant Antoni cake.

Another popular activity is the blessing of animals in the portal of the Romanesque church, where later Sant Antoni cakes are sold.

When the "Baconet" and cake raffle has finished, the Sant Antoni "ditxos" are sung. These sayings or folk songs, popular on Sant Antoni are a very interesting example of popular local literature. They still survive nowadays, thanks to popular poets who recite these poems every year. Sometimes, they include a little criticism on political matters.

Villagers from Gandesa used to make an altar in front of the parish church on Vella square, where the image was brought after Mass. The Saint presided over the blessing as well as all of the other festival activities.

The festival ends with the Head Dancer dancing around the bonfire. Male dancers offer the female dancers Sant Antoni cake, and the "Baconet" gives the dancers sweets.
