The Picasso Centre, Horta de Sant Joan

The painter, Pablo Picasso visited Horta de Sant Joan twice, once in 1898 and again in 1909. These stays were not for long, but they were very fruitful in terms of creating paintings. It was, in fact, in this very village in Terra Alta, where Picasso began the artisitc style of Cubism, inspired by the square shaped Roques de Benet (rocks).
To preserve and promote the legacy which this painter, from Malaga, left in this village, the Picasso Centre exhibits reproductions of almost 200 paintings which the painter created while staying here, as well as other paintings he did in Barcelona or Paris which were inspired by the scenery of Horta. The Picasso Centre is located at the old hospital, which is a Rennaissance building. During the Carlist Wars it was burnt down and was later used as barracks for the Civil Guards. After being completely restored, it was opened to the public in 1992 as the site for the Picasso Centre.
