The old village of Corbera d'Ebre

add to planner

The old village of Corbera d'Ebre has become one of the most representative symbols of the tragic effects of the Ebre Battle and the Spanish Civil War. This village, which is located on top of Montera mountain, was completely destroyed by aerial bombardments in 1938, and was later rebuilt on land at the foot of the mountain. Now, the ruined houses and tracks where streets used to be, are a silent witness of the violent battle. Standing out on the skyline, is the old Sant Pere church, which is only partially destroyed. In front of it, there is a beautiful viewpoint, and from it you can see the rugged mountains of La Serra de Cavalls and La Serra de Pàndols (sites where the most intense and brutal combats of the battle occured), and most of the land where the Ebre Battle, lasting 115 days, took place. Due to its symbolic value, Corbera d'Ebre has been declared a Site of Historic Interest by the Catalan Government.

To complete your visit to the ruins of this village, the 115 Days Interpretation Centre is a great way to discover more details about the war, and the political point of view of the combats of 1938 between the national and republican armies.
