La Punta de la banya and Alfacs Bay, Ebre Delta National Park

add to planner

La Punta de la Banya is a small peninsula in the far south of the Ebre Delta. It lies in front of the coastline of Sant Carles de la Ràpita, and is linked to the Ebre Delta by Trabucador isthmus (a long sandbar totalling 4km in length and between 100 and 200 metres in width). The whole of this area is known as Alfacs bay, and it is the largest natural harbour in the whole of Europe.

Alfacs bay is an extremely important area, due to the amount of aquatic and sea birds living there. Punta de la Banya has in fact been declared a Partial Nature Reserve. Access is restricted, except for between 15th July and 15th September, when without leaving the beach, you can enter without a vehicle.

Although the Trabucador isthmus is a fragile area, often changing with the winds, it is a great place for birdwatching, both at open sea and inland. From the observation towers which have been erected, you can see the lighthouse, Montsià mountain range, Sant Carles de la Ràpita, and Trinitat salt works, where it is easy to spot all kinds of sea birds, especially flamingoes, practically the whole year round.
