Walled enclosures in Tortosa

add to planner

The walled enclosure which closed the city of Tortosa in the nineteenth century was one of the longest in Catalonia. It had five main gates, and was built around various small forts. The Tortosa footpath "passeig de ronda", borders the walls of Suda Castle, and is a magnificent place for getting to know the centre of the city, and become more familiar with the history behind all of these fortifications.
The centre of this walled site is without doubt Suda Castle, and there you will find the Parador Nacional de Turisme (State-owned Hotel). This is an impressive fortress from the Arab era, and it overlooks the old quarter of the city. Despite modifications which have taken place over the centuries, most of the original structure is still preserved today. The east side of the castle is linked to the Avançades de Sant Joan, which is an impressive network of small forts and large ditches, and is where Remolins wall stands, ending at Célio Tower.
However, the stretch of fortifications does not end here, on one of the hills to the south of the city is the Bastion of Sitjar, which used to protect the old barracks of Sant Francesc, nowadays, this is the Verge de la Cinta Hospital. Close-by is the Bastion of Carme, which is connected to Bonette and Orleans forts. Finally, to the far north of the city centre, are the remains of Tenasses Castle, a huge fortification from the eighteenth century, which accommodated 160 men, and had a storeroom and a hall for the officials.
