The Sénia River

add to planner

Riu SéniaThe Senia River has become a special symbol as it marks the administrative, not cultural border, between Catalonia and País Valencià, as established in 1240 by king Jaume I. It starts in Pobla de Benifassà (Baix Maestrat region) where small streams, the waters of Salt ravine (which come from Fredes) and those of Fou ravine (in the south of Els Ports Massif) all meet. About halfway along its course, it joins the Ulldecona reservoir, which was built in 1985 to regulate the water and to relieve the lack of water in dry seasons. After crossing La Sénia and Ulldecona (in Montsià), and Rossell, Sant Rafel del Maestrat, Traiguera, Sant Jordi del Maestrat (in Baix Maestrat), it reaches the Mediterranean Sea near the Sol de Riu beach, between Alcanar and Vinarós. From the Middle Ages, well into the nineteenth century, many paper and flour mills were built, to make use of the hydraulic power of it waters.
