THE EBRE NATURE TRAIL (GR 99)
THE EBRE NATURE TRAIL The cultural, social and natural importance of the Ebre River encouraged hikers and trekkers in Spain to create the GR-99, known as the Camí Natural de l’Ebre (Ebre Nature Path). This route follows the course of the river from Reinosa, where it begins, down to the estuary. It is about 1,150 kilometres long, and divided into 59 stretches of 20 kilometres each, which cross the autonomous regions of Cantàbria, Castilla-Leon, La Rioja, the Basque Country, Navarra, Aragón and Catalonia.

The Ebre Nature Trail is the first of the great riverbank trails in what is known as the “Nature Itinerary Network”, promoted by the Ministry of Environment. With this network of trails, it is hoped that the public can become more aware of the natural values associated with high quality environmental surroundings that rivers produce. At the same time, they also try to favour rural development in the areas they pass through. In fact, from the very first moment, this project of trails was created as a special infrastructure for leisure, sustainable tourism, sport and education.

The Catalan Trekking Association has published the guidebook "Sender de Gran Recorregut. Entre Mequinensa i Delta de l'Ebre. GR 99. Sender de l'Ebre"; this book is a collection of the different stages of this trail throughout the Catalan regions. It is a great asset for hikers who are interested in covering this stretch of the GR-99.
