LA VIA VERDA (THE GREEN TRACK)

The Green Track in Terres de l'Ebre is a culturally touristic option aimed at people who love cycling. This route is of medium difficulty if you are on your bike, but you can also follow it on horseback or on foot. The route follows the old railway track which linked La Puebla de Híjar (in Aragón) with Tortosa and crosses the regions of Terra Alta and Baix Ebre. It is well-signposted and the ground has been adapted for cycling. It borders the western side of Els Ports massif and the banks of Canaletes River until it reaches the Ebre. The scenery is spectacular and the route includes passing through 41 tunnels, some of which are quite long (up to 750m).
This route starts at the old Lledó-Arnes railway station. There, you will find a flat path which goes up to Horta de Sant Joan and then borders the Santa Bàrbara Mountain with Sant Salvador Convent at the bottom. Soon afterwards you go through Bot and little by little the route starts heading downwards as it enters the breathtakingly beautiful Valley of the Canaletes River. Then you pass the old railway station in Prat de Compte, just a few kilometres from the La Fontcalda Hermitage, on the left bank of the Canaletes River. Shortly, the valley starts to get wider and the landscape changes as you begin to cross La Serra de Pàndols and La Serra de Cavalls. You will go through the village of Pinell de Brai and then enter the Baix Ebre region. Then you will come to a path which follows the Ebre River and the C-12 main road. After going through Xerta, the route continues peacefully through fields of vegetables and orchards until it reaches Aldover. From there the route continues to Raval de Jesús, before arriving in Roquetes and finishing in Tortosa.
