THE SIRGA TRAIL
THE SIRGA TRAIL From ancient times, the many civilizations that lived near the Ebre have sailed its waters: the Iberians, the Romans, the Saracens, the Christians.... Ships were usually pushed along by the favourable river currents and the strength of the winds. But if this wasn't the case, then necessary help was given by animals and the strong “Sirgador” men, who pulled the ropes attached to the ships full of merchandise, from the paths along the river.

Nowadays, important stretches of those Sirga towpaths, from where donkeys and men controlled the direction of the boats, are still preserved. This system of paths has been combined with other tracks and roads along the Ebre, and is now used for hiking. This route starts in the village of Benifallet, which is in the far north of the Baix Ebre region, and it finishes in Mequinensa in Aragón.
