ROUTE OF THE TEMPLARS
The order of Temple was founded in the 11th century, after the First Crusade, with the aim of protecting travellers who went on pilgrimages to the Holy Land. In Catalonia, the Templars conquered highly strategic places such as Tortosa and Miravet.
Now the Domus Templi (Temple domains) brand handles the route of the Templars. This offers visitors the chance to get to know the architectural heritage and history of the Order of the Temple, in lands belonging to the old Crown of Aragón, which covered the current regions of Aragón, Catalonia and Pais Valencià. So, besides Tortosa and Miravet (Terres de l'Ebre), other villages like Lleida, Peñíscola in Pais Valencià and Montsó in Aragón also form part of the route.
Regarding Terres de l'Ebre, the two most important buildings are Miravet Castle, an impressive fortification situated at the top of this village in Ribera d'Ebre, and Suda Castle in Tortosa, a strategic point for watching ships coming from the Mediterranean Sea to the interior lands along the Ebre. The Templars also controlled small castles, watchtowers and country houses in these regions, which still preserve the mark of the knights of the Order of the Temple.
