L'Assut de Xerta i Tivenys

The dam of L'Assut is found in one of the most spectacular and representative places of the lowest course of the Ebro river. Placed at a height of the villages of Xerta and Tivenys it seems that its building goes back to the Islamic times. It was restored in the middle of the twelfth century, but nevertheless, it was not finished until 1441. By mid-nineteenth century it was conditioned to lead the water of the canals on the Right bank and on the Left bank of the Ebro river that, still nowadays, supply water to the Delta and to the inland fields of the valley. Despite these works, a lock allows the the crafts to sail along the Ebro river. At present a small hydroelectric head office has been settled here.
