The walled enclosure that used to surround the town of Tortosa in the nineteenth century was one of the most extensive in Catalonia. It had five main doors and about several small forts were articulated. The "camí de ronda" (footpath) of Tortosa borders the walls of the castle of La Suda and it is a magnificent space to know the centre of town and, simultaneously, to get in touch with the history that is hidden behind all these fortifications.
The centre of this walled set is, undoubtedly, the castle of La Suda, where at present there is the Parador Nacional de Turisme. It is an impressive fortress from Arab times that stands out on top of the old town of the city. Despite the modifications that have taken place throughout the centuries, it preserves a great deal of its original structure. The eastern side of the Castle, connects with the Avançades of Sant Joan, an impressive framework of small forts and big ditches wherefrom there goes out the wall of Remolins that culminates in the Tower of the Célio.

But the set of fortifications does not finish here, since, on one of the hills placed more towards the south of the town, there is the Bastion of the Sitjar that used to protect the ancient barracks of Sant Francesc, space that the Hospital Verge de la Cinta occupies at present . Really close, we find the Bastió del Carme that leads to the small fort of la Bonette and that of Orleans. Finally, in the northern end of the town centre it excels the remains of the castle of Tenasses, a big fortress from the eighteenth century that had a big center to put up 160 men, in addition to a store and a pavilion for officials.
