Tortosa Cathedral

Tortosa Cathedral, is without doubt, the most outstanding piece of architecture in the whole city. The present Gothic temple was started in 1347, and designed according to the fashions of the fourteenth century. It occupies the site of the old Romanesque cathedral, of which there are only a few walls and windows remain. The building has a basilical shape, with three naves and side chapels.

The central nave, the cloister and the chapel of Mare de Déu de la Cinta are well worth visiting. There are two altarpieces located in the apse which are also of interest. In the presbytery we find a Romanesque altarpiece of la Mare de Déu de l'Estrella, made in gold-leaf and polychrome wood. There is another in the central chapel of the ambulatory, this altarpiece of the Transfiguration from the second half of the fifteenth century, is said to be from the famous workshop of Jaume Huget.

The Gothic cloister has a trapezoidal floor and balconies with pointed arches. The naves contain an important example of headstones. The old entrance to the canons dining room is also here (at present it is an exhibition room), as well as one of the main entrances to the temple.

Mare de Déu la Cinta Chapel is situated at one end of the central nave, it was built between 1672 and 1725, and features an altarpiece with the image of Mare de Déu de la Cinta. The impressive paintings, murals and copper marble covering (extracted from the Mare de Déu de la Cinta quarry on the outskirts of the city), make this a clear example of Baroque architecture.

Most of the Cathedral's treasure was lost during the Spanish Civil War, however, there are still a number of codices, the mediaeval tapestry of the Holy Supper, an Arab chest in wood and ivory, and silver from the high altar.
