Episcopal Palace, Tortosa

add to planner

Episcopal Palace was built at the beginning of the fourteenth century to accommodate the Bishop of Tortosa. The main façade of this building is in front of the Santa Maria of Tortosa Cathedral, which has a large entrance with a round arch leading to the court, and the rooms of the building are situated around it. In 1945, when the river walls were built, the rear of the building was directly over the Ebre River.

From the patio, an outset staircase leads to the upper floor balconies which are decorated with ogive arches. Here, you can find the Bishop's offices and the entrance to the chapel which Bishop Berenguer de Prats had built in 1316, and an impressive sculpture with a relief of the Virgin Mary and other biblical characters. The apse inside the chapel is worth looking at, as it is covered with starred crosses and some fine murals. This building is a magnificent example of Catalan gothic art.
