SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PROJECTS IN TERRES DE L'EBRE, Work camps and voluntary work
People who are interested in the protection of natural areas in Terres de l’Ebre can get in touch with the associations and institutions working to safeguard the environmental heritage in these southern regions of Catalonia.
One option is to participate in one of the work camps which are organized in different parts of the Ebre Delta, and offer the chance to live in direct contact with nature for a few days, in one of the most important protected areas in the Mediterranean basin. The Fundació Territori i Paisatge de Caixa Catalunya in collaboration with the Obre’t Ebre youth organization, organizes stays for collecting plants, the management of riverside forests and the control and monitoring of birds.
On the other hand, the SEO/Birdlife consevation organization organizes international work camps. Participants stay in Riet Vell Nature Reserve, where they develop tasks for the upkeep of reed beds, lakes and nesting areas for waterfowl. They also help with the upkeep of routes for environmental education and scientific monitoring of the fauna and flora on the Delta.
Another option is to join one of the many environmental volunteers associations in Terres de l'Ebre. These are organizations which organize excursions, workshops, informative conferences and exhibitions, among other acitivites. Ebre Delta National Park, Els Ports National Park and Sebes Nature Reserve in Flix, all have their own volunteers associations.
L'Associació Ornitològica Picampall in Terres de l'Ebre (Picampall Bird Watching Association), is another association whose aim is to preserve, study and educate on the rich fauna in the four Ebre regions. It was formed by a group of people who are strong conservationists with a scientific spirit. Their activities are models of ways to use the earth which are compatible with biologial diversity, such as identifying and preventing the negative impact on ecosystems where natural resources and human activity often share the same space.
