SUSTAINABLE TOURISM PROJECTS IN TERRES DE L'EBRE, Sebes i Meandre de Flix Nature Reserve
The interior stretches of the Ebre River offer a large number of natural treasures, which are still somewhat unknown. You can find some of the best preserved riverside forests in the Sebes i Meandre de Flix Wild Fauna Nature Reserve, in Flix. The preservation of this area has been promoted by environmentalist group Freire, with the support of the local government from Flix, the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Foundació Territori i Paisatge de Caixa Catalunya.
The woodlands - where white poplars, black poplars and white willows predominate - and the lagoon at the reserve, are home to a large amount of birds, among which, the most important are the stork and the Marsh Harrier, a bird of prey characteristic of marshes. You can also find horses, originally from La Camargue in France, which graze on the marshes. To observe the fauna and flora at length, this area has bird watching towers and footbridges through the riverside forest, with short signposted routes for pedestrians. To see a panoramic view of the Flix Meander with a spectacular sunset, it is necessary to leave Sebes Reserve and take the road up to the highest point of this incredible place.
The interpretation and activities centre at the reserve is located in the Mas del Director, an old but recently restored farmhouse. The building is open all year round and offers a guide service and environmental education. There is also a permanent exhibition on the origins and the formation of the nature reserve, as well as scaled models and life-size reproductions of some birds.
